Speech in Wind
نویسنده
چکیده
Wind noise is somewhat of a paradox for hearing aid users – an idiosyncrasy of the physics of a microphone. You rarely, if ever, hear people who don’t wear hearing aids complain about wind noise. Microphones are designed to pick up sound and are therefore a key component for every hearing aid. They bring many advantages and the introduction of two microphones into the same hearing aid has been a key innovation. At the same time, when in wind, a microphone is susceptible to mistaking air passing over its diaphragm for real sound. Digital hearing aid technology has allowed significant advances in bringing comfort to hearing aid users, reducing the annoyance of wind noise through processing capabilities. MarkeTrak1 data shows that between 2004 and 2010, consumer satisfaction regarding wind noise annoyance improved 7% points. At the same time it still had the lowest satisfaction rating of all sound quality criteria (Figure 1). Surprisingly it even scored worse than both noisy situations and feedback. Whilst comfort has been the focus in recent times, the topic of intelligibility has been given little attention. With an increasing number of active hearing aid users, intelligibility will be an increasingly important concern during hearing aid selection as many outdoor situations involve communication. Reducing the impact of wind noise on cochlear implant processors with two microphones.
Behind-the-ear (BTE) processors of cochlear implant (CI) devices offer little to almost no protection from wind noise in most incidence angles. To assess speech intelligibility, eight CI recipients were tested in 3 and 9 m/s wind. Results indicated that speech intelligibility decreased substantially when the wind velocity, and in turn the wind sound pressure level, increased. A two-microphone w...
متن کاملCoherent Modulation Comb Filtering for Enhancing Speech in Wind Noise
Enhancing single-channel speech corrupted by wind noise has proven to be a difficult topic due to the complex characteristics of wind noise. Methods that assume a stationary or quasistationary noise source are ineffective against wind noise due to its nonstationarity and unpredictability. In contrast, the new method proposed works by finding the elements of the signal that are speech-like and s...

متن کاملReal-Time Wind Noise Detection and Suppression with Neural-Based Signal Reconstruction for Mult-Channel, Low-Power Devices
Active wind noise detection and suppression techniques are a new and essential paradigm for enhancing ASR-based functionality with smart glasses, in addition to other wearable and smart devices in the broader IoT (Internet of things). In this paper, we develop two separate algorithms for wind noise detection and suppression, respectively, operational in a challenging, low-energy regime. Togethe...
متن کاملWind Noise Reduction in Single Channel Speech Signals
In this thesis a number of wind noise reduction techniques have been reviewed, implemented and evaluated. The focus is on reducing wind noise from speech in single channel signals. More speci cally a generalized version of a Spectral Subtraction method is implemented along with a Non-Stationary version that can estimate the noise even while speech is present. Also a Non-Negative Matrix Factoriz...
متن کاملA Morphological Approach to Single-Channel Wind-Noise Suppression
Today, a variety of technical devices deploy spoken language processing technology. In many practical use cases, not only stationary ambient noises but non-stationary interferences, such as wind noise, degrade their performance. If only one microphone is available, regular noise reduction schemes are capable of suppressing stationary interferences. Wind noises, however, are highly non-stationar...
